Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation has welcomed the Government’s reappointment of Ian Carson AM as ARPC Chair, Robin Low as a Member and the new appointment of Maria Fernandez PSM as a Member. We also take this opportunity to thank Michael Callaghan AM PSM for his service to ARPC having completed his term as a Member on 4 October 2019.

The Government has announced the reappointment of Ian Carson for a further three-year term from 1 July 2020, the reappointment of Robin Low for three years from 23 April 2020 and the appointment of Maria Fernandez PSM for three years from 23 April 2020.

Dr Christopher Wallace, ARPC CEO, said: “It is fantastic for ARPC and our stakeholders to have the benefit of Ian’s leadership for a second term for the stability this brings, together with Ian’s strong relationship with the Government, particularly at this difficult time for our stakeholders.”

Mr Ian Carson AM, ARPC Chair, said: “I thank our Minister, the Hon Michael Sukkar MP, and am very excited to continue my role with ARPC. I warmly welcome the reappointment of Robin Low and the new appointment of Maria Fernandez PSM to the ARPC Board and I look forward to working with them to advance ARPC’s corporate plan with our stakeholders in these challenging times.”

Mr Carson also said: “I am very pleased to continue working with Robin Low who brings us deep insurance accounting expertise. I also warmly welcome Maria Fernandez as our newest Member, who brings a deep understanding of the terrorism threat, coupled with top level Australian Public Service experience in intelligence and security.”

Dr Wallace said: “At ARPC we are pleased to be able to attract and retain high calibre Board members to provide continuity as well as welcoming new skills.”

Michael Callaghan AM PSM has completed his term as a Member of ARPC. Mr Carson said: “Mike Callaghan made a significant contribution to ARPC during his term, particularly in guiding the development of ARPC strategy and strategic projects, and his contributions will be missed.”

Mike Callaghan is Chairing the Government’s Retirement Income Review and is also Chair of the Aged Care Financing Authority.

Biographical information on appointments:

Ian Carson AM

Ian Carson has served as Chair of ARPC since July 2017. Ian is also Chairman of Markets at PwC. Previously Ian was Chair of PPB Advisory, a professional advisory firm, of which Ian was a founding partner. Ian is co-founder of SecondBite, a for purpose organisation which rescues nutritious food that would otherwise go to landfill. Ian has extensive board membership experience having served on the boards of organisations including Social Ventures Victoria, SecondBite and PPB Advisory.

Ian is also President of The Victorian Arts Centre Trust and Trustee of The Melbourne Cricket Ground. In 2017, Ian was awarded an Order of Australia for his work in Food Rescue and Business. In 2018, together with his wife Simone, he was appointed ‘Melbournian of the Year’.

Robin Low

Robin Low served a first three–year term as a member of ARPC commencing 5 October 2016 and now re-appointed for a further term.

Robin has extensive board and accounting experience, is on the board of four listed companies: Appen Limited, AUB Group Limited, IPH Limited and Marley Spoon Limited. Robin is also on the Boards of three not-for-profit companies. Robin is a chartered accountant with more than 25 years’ experience, including more than 17 years’ experience as an assurance partner specialising in financial services, particularly insurance.

Maria Fernandez PSM

Maria Fernandez has a distinguished career in the public sector. From 2015 to 2019, she was Deputy Secretary, Intelligence and Capability with the Department of Home Affairs. Before that, Maria was Director (CEO) of the Australian Geospatial Intelligence Organisation. Maria’s experience also includes the cyber threat environment through an earlier role as Deputy Director Intelligence at the Australian Signals Directorate, and Maria was the first female head of an Australian intelligence agency.

Maria was awarded a Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in advancing Australia’s interests. Maria is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.
