ARPC releases quarterly statistics

ARPC releases quarterly statistics

20 May 2025

Since its inception, the cyclone pool has received 9,399 cyclone claims to date with a total incurred value of $121 million, according to statistics released today.

Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC) which operates the cyclone pool, announced the milestone in the latest Cyclone Reinsurance Pool Statistics Report. The quarterly report draws on data generated by the cyclone pool, which operates Australia wide, but targets support to cyclone-prone areas.

Key findings from the report include that, as at 31 December 2024, the cyclone pool:

  • has received 9,399 cyclone claims to date with a total incurred value of $121 million.
  • covers over 3.1 million buildings against financial loss from cyclones with an aggregate building exposure of just under $2.23 trillion.
  • has annual cyclone pool premiums of approximately $546 million for Home, $53 million for Strata and $25 million for Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) properties.
  • provides $6.9 million in annual mitigation discounts for Home properties.
  • notes that the average excess for home building policies are highest in Far North Queensland with the average home excess reaching $1,953. Southern Western Australia has the lowest average excesses across both home buildings and contents.

This report has been updated with two new sections, including average policy excess trends and claims received by ARPC per cyclone event.

Background on the cyclone pool

The cyclone pool was launched by ARPC in 2022 and is intended to help make insurance more affordable and more available in areas with medium to high cyclone risk, for eligible policies in three classes of business – Home, Strata (residential and some commercial), and for Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
