6 October 2026

Premium discounts recognising cyclone mitigation measures have reached $9.7 million across homes reinsured by the Cyclone Reinsurance Pool, according to the latest quarterly statistics released by the Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC).

The Cyclone Reinsurance Pool Statistics as at 30 June 2026 show the cyclone pool reinsures approximately 3.2 million buildings representing more than $2.5 trillion in aggregate building sums insured, while Home reinsurance premium rates remained broadly stable.

Key findings

  • Total annual cyclone pool premiums are approximately $675 million across Home, Strata and SME.
  • Average annual cyclone pool premiums are approximately $193 for Home, $820 for Strata and $252 for SME risks.
  • The pool reinsures approximately 3.05 million Home buildings, 72,000 Strata buildings and 99,000 SME buildings.
  • Home reinsurance premium rates remain broadly stable. Reported Home and SME risk counts increased this quarter following insurer corrections to previously reported data.

Claims activity

The cyclone pool has received 133,078 claims to date, with a total net incurred value of approximately $1.65 billion. As at 31 July 2026, ARPC had paid approximately $1.37 billion in claims.

During the June quarter, ARPC continued to receive and pay claims from cyclone events in previous seasons, including Tropical Cyclones Jasper and Alfred.

Mitigation and resilience

The cyclone pool continues to support risk reduction through premium incentives for eligible mitigation measures. As at 30 June 2026, $9.7 million in mitigation discounts had been applied to in-force Home premiums, up from $9 million reported at 31 December 2025.

Mitigation discounts recognise measures including roller door bracing, window protection, roof tie-down upgrades and roof replacement.

Mitigation discounts have also been extended to Strata and SME properties, with take-up to be included in future reports as insurers begin collecting and reporting this information to ARPC.

Coverage insights

All Home properties reinsured through the cyclone pool include wind cover. As at 30 June 2026, 86 per cent of Home building policies included flood cover and 64 per cent included storm surge cover, while 87 per cent of Home contents policies included flood cover and 66 per cent included storm surge cover.

Since the cyclone pool commenced, the proportion of Home building and contents policies that include storm surge cover has increased by approximately 10 percentage points, while the proportion with riverine flood cover has remained broadly stable at just under 90 per cent.

Background

The Cyclone Reinsurance Pool commenced on 1 July 2022 and is administered by ARPC. It provides reinsurance for cyclone and cyclone-related flood damage to insured Home, Strata and SME properties. The pool operates Australia-wide, while targeting support to cyclone-prone areas, and is supported by an annually reinstated $10 billion Commonwealth guarantee.
