Threat level and Declarations

The National Terrorism Threat Level Advisory System is a scale of five levels to provide advice about the likelihood of an act of terrorism occurring in Australia:

  • Certain
  • Expected
  • Probable
  • Possible
  • Not expected

The current level is Probable.

When the threat level changes, the Australian Government provides advice on what the threat level means, where the threat is coming from, potential targets and how a terrorist act may be carried out.

The National Terrorism Threat Level is regularly reviewed in line with the security environment and intelligence.

Terrorism Declarations

The responsible Ministers, either the federal Treasurer or Assistant Treasurer, declares when a terrorist incident has occurred for insurance purposes under the Terrorism and Cyclone Insurance Act 2003. A declaration activates the provisions of the Act relating to eligible terrorism losses.

All previously declared terrorism incidents can be found in this information box.
