The Opportunity

ARPC is seeking a Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) as part of a planned succession process to ensure continuity, stability and confidence in the administration of both reinsurance pools.

This is a unique executive leadership opportunity that combines deep technical underwriting expertise with meaningful public purpose impact. The CUO is ARPC’s principal reinsurance authority, accountable for underwriting strategy, portfolio performance and insurer engagement, and plays a critical role in supporting government, industry and community outcomes.

Role responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading underwriting, treaty administration and premium audit functions across both pools
  • Establishing and managing reinsurance contracts with insurers and retrocession arrangements with global reinsurers
  • Driving portfolio performance, including gross written premium and underwriting outcomes
  • Leading ARPC’s terrorism retrocession program and engagement with global reinsurance markets
  • Contributing to terrorism catastrophe modelling, pricing insights and risk assessment
  • Providing advice to the CEO, Board and Government on reinsurance and insurance risk matters
  • Representing ARPC across industry, government and international forums
  • Leading and developing high-performing teams aligned to ARPC’s values and purpose

Candidate Attributes

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field – Mandatory
  • ANZIIF Senior Associate or Fellow – Desirable

Experience

  • Substantial experience in insurance/reinsurance mgmt. with significant experience in property underwriting – Mandatory.
  • Knowledge or insurance, reinsurance banking or financial service – Mandatory
  • Experience engaging with government or regulators – Desirable

  • Deep underwriting and reinsurance expertise
  • Strong commercial and strategic acumen
  • Ability to influence senior stakeholders across industry and government
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Proven executive leadership capability and ability to build high-performing teams

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Australian Citizenship required
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an NV1 Security Clearance
  • Role based in Sydney CBD with hybrid working arrangements
